Nomad Collective / Film Retreat

Chase The Story.
Capture The Wild.

Three days. One crew. One story to tell. Learn outdoor filmmaking where it actually happens — in the field, inside real hunts, with working filmmakers beside you.

The Nomad Approach

Story First.
Everything Else
Serves It.

A camera is just a tool until you know what you're trying to say.

This retreat is built around learning to see the story before chasing the shot. Every lens choice, camera move, interview, piece of sound and edit has a reason.

We teach inside the process — while you're actually making something.
Real Conditions / Real Decisions

The Story
Doesn't Wait.

A duck hunt doesn't stop for a second take. The light changes. Birds work. People move. Moments happen once. That's the classroom.
01 / SEE IT

Find What Matters.

Before worrying about the prettiest frame, understand the people, the place and what the story is actually about.

02 / CHASE IT

Make The Decision.

Where should the camera live? What moment can't be recreated? When do you move and when do you stay? The decision becomes the lesson.

03 / SHAPE IT

Find The Film.

Review what you captured. Figure out what's missing. Go back for what the story needs — then find it again in the edit.

Your Mentors

Filmmakers
In The Story
With You.

This isn't somebody standing at the front of a room telling you how they'd do it. You'll work beside filmmakers who do this for a living. They'll explain the why, challenge the choice, show you when it matters — then hand the decision back to you.
Story / Creative Direction

Drew

Finding the story, protecting the idea and making creative decisions that move the film forward.

Cinematography / Field Execution

Alex

Translating story into images when the light, subjects and opportunities aren't waiting on you.

Edit / Post / Structure

Ilya

Finding the film inside the footage through structure, pacing, editing and post-production.

Production Assistant / Camera Utility

Jayse

Moving with the crews, supporting production and helping solve whatever the story throws at us.

Three Days / One Film

Intention.
Discovery.
Finish.

DAY 01

Intention

Meet the crew. Talk story. Scout the ranch. Shoot fishing sequences, build interviews, work through lighting and controlled production, then chase golden hour into the field.

DAY 02

Discovery

Start before daylight inside an active duck hunt. Mentors embed with the crews in the field. Review what worked, find what's missing, shoot the pickups and begin shaping the rough cut.

DAY 03

Finish

Return to the field only for what the film still needs. Production closes and the focus moves to edit, sound, color, export and screening the finished films together.

What You Leave With

Better Eyes.
Better Instincts.
Better Stories.

The goal isn't to leave with a notebook full of rules. It's to leave with more confidence in your decisions, stronger storytelling instincts, a finished film and a few days spent making something with people who care about the same things you do.
